The Eye of the Needle

The gate would not budge for her. Furious at such nonsense, Donna Lee strode back to her hybrid. But before she opened the door, a voice crackled, “Turn around, Ma’am.”

She looked at the bricks that flanked either side of the gate.

“Turn and identify yourself, Ma’am.”

“Who is this, anyway?” Donna Lee demanded into the intercom, which she’d finally spotted amid the pansies that softened the untempered red of the brick wall.

“Do you have a password, Ma’am?”

“I’m here to see Dr. Schine. He lives on Cheryl Court.”

“You’ll have to get a password from your party, Ma’am.”

“What?”

“Please enter your password, Ma’am.”

Donna Lee assumed the pose she’d learned courtesy of WaistWatch’s 7:05 A.M. kickboxing class. Yes, she was enrolled at the hated spa, mainly because it was so convenient, right across the railroad tracks from her office. The only secular gym in town was way out by WalMark.

“Better buzz me in this instant, Ma’am,” Donna Lee said, with a reverse flying crane, “or I’ll…”

A hiss on the dented intercom gave way to a perky “…and two Whoppers with a Snickers Frosty. Would you like that super-sized?”

“Huh?”

“Please drive up.”
